Comments: The Katadyn Gravity Water Filter is a reasonable option for getting clean water. It filters large volumes of water very quickly and you don’t have to physically do anything! If it is such a great product then why are we rating it 4 stars? Well, it is a great filter but it has limitations. The large volumes of water are useful in a big group but since there are only two of us it is kind of overkill. It would be amazing for back country camp trips when we have a larger family. Also, it is hard to clean after use and if not done correctly you could end up with a moldy, useless filter cartridge that needs to be replaced. The filter cartridges can be expensive. To use this filter effectively you need relatively clean, deeper (knee height) water which is not always available. Grabbing too much dirt or algae will clog the filter, shortening the lifespan. This filter works well for canoe trips since you are always around deep enough water but it isn’t the most effective filter to use on a backpacking trip and it weighs too much. We are thinking of trying the Sawyer Squeeze on our next backpacking trip which is smaller and better suited for 1-2 person groups.
